Stephen puts Peugeot on Podium in Cork

Stephen Wright scored a career best international finish on last weekend’s Cork 20 International Rally with the current Motorsport Ireland Young Rally Driver of the Year taking his Killyhevlin Hotel backed Peugeot 208 R2 to a class win and an incredible 3rd place overall on the Millstreet based event.

Wright, who has been competing in Belgium for the majority of this season, has only tackled a handful of events at home this year but he couldn’t resist the lure of the Cork 20.

“We clinched the Irish Tarmac Group N Championship on the Cork 20 last year so it’s a special event for me. The Peugeot 208 R2 is a fantastic little car but I never dreamed we could finish so high up the order this year. Keith Rainey did a fantastic job preparing the car in the run up to the event, keeping the car reliable and that was the key really. I’d also like to thank Mikie Galvin for stepping in to call the pacenotes this weekend. Like the car, he never missed a beat. To the best of my knowledge it’s the first time a Peugeot has finished on the podium of an Irish Tarmac Championship round which is a bit of a bonus.”

Wright is now preparing for the final round of the Belgian Championship, the Rallye du Condroz, which takes place at the end of this month. Stephen currently lies 2nd in the 208 Rally Trophy and is relishing the challenge of another new event.

“Condroz will be another new challenge for us and hopefully we can build on all the experience we have gained on the continent to date with another strong performance in the 208 Trophy. Susanne has been absent for the last 2 events and although I have had capable replacements I am looking forward to teaming back up with her.”
